Check Fraud On the Rise

Check fraud is on the rise despite the decline of paper check usage. Criminals steal checks from the mail, use "check washing" to alter payees and amounts, and pass counterfeit checks using your account details. Protect your money! Learn the red flags, report suspicious activity fast, and keep your accounts safe. Fraud is clever, but so are you.

Check fraud covers several crimes:

  • Check washing: criminals use chemicals to erase ink, then rewrite the payee and amount.
  • Counterfeit checks: your routing and account numbers are copied from a real check to print new, fake checks.
  • Forged endorsements and duplicate deposits: stolen checks may be signed by someone else or deposited after a photo of the check was already used.

RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR:

  • A bill you mailed by check is never received.
  • You see a cleared check with an unknown payee or changed amount.
  • Your incoming mail looks tampered with.
  • You notice missing mail.
  • Account alerts show withdrawals or checks you don't recognize.
